At the completion of breast reconstruction, nipples can be reconstructed. They may be tattooed to complete the overall outcome.
Once breast reconstruction is complete, nipples can be reconstructed using one of many techniques. The tissue often retracts and this is compensated for by making the nipples larger than the final result.
Nipple Reconstruction Techniques
Some techniques use local flaps of skin or fat, while other techniques require skin grafts. It may be necessary to use a small amount of cartilage to maintain the nipple projection.
The advantages and disadvantages of each technique will be carefully explained to allow a full informed decision. Tattooing of the new nipple areola complex completes the reconstruction.
